STARKVILLE — An officer-involved shooting Monday has left one man dead and an Oktibbeha County sheriff’s deputy in the hospital with stab wounds.
Deputies were dispatched to the area of Cannon Road in Oktibbeha County at 5:47 p.m. Monday in response to reports of a man standing in the road and wielding a knife.
When deputies responded to the scene and approached the man, he attacked one of the deputies with the knife, stabbing him repeatedly. A taser and pepper spray were used in an attempt to subdue the man, but he continued his attack.
The second deputy on the scene then shot and killed the man, whose identity has not been released.
While the deputies’ identities have not been confirmed by the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department, sources have named deputy David Lewis as the victim of the attack and deputy Shannon Williams as the deputy who used deadly force.
Lewis is currently in the Oktibbeha County Hospital in stable condition.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is handling the case, as is standard practice any time an officer discharges his weapon in the line of duty.
