STARKVILLE -- A Mississippi State University student has been charged with second degree assault and possession of an unlawful firearm in Connell, Wash.
James Thomas Hall's arrest on Sunday concluded a missing person's search for the 20-year-old junior from Huntsville, Ala., who had been placed on the National Crime Information Center's list just 24 hours earlier.
Starkville Police Department Chief David Lindley said his department initially received a call from Hall's family to locate the MSU student.
"They were concerned because he was thought to possibly be suicidal," Lindley said. "We were successful in putting information out that led to Washington authorities encountering him in a traffic stop."
Reportedly, Hall was stopped by an officer with the Connell Police Department after Hall ran a stop sign. As the officer approached the vehicle, he noticed a sawed-off shotgun in Hall's lap, which Hall pointed toward the window of the driver's side door.
Hall said he had planned on shooting the officer as he approached, but changed his mind.
The officer drew his gun and asked Hall to step out of the vehicle. Hall complied and was taken into custody.
A suicide note was found in Hall's vehicle.
Hall was booked by Franklin County Corrections on Sunday, and his initial court appearance was held Monday afternoon.
Hall has yet to post $50,000 bond as of Monday night.
Lindley said there are no pending charges against Hall as far as the SPD is concerned.
Director of MSU's Office of University Relations Sid Salter said the SPD made the university aware of the situation, but beyond cooperating with the SPD and campus police, MSU has no further comment on the investigation.
