The special election to fill the 36th House seat vacated by the death of David Gibbs, D-West Point, is less than a month away. Tuesday, March 12 was the date set by Gov. Phil Bryant for the special election.
Six candidates have qualified through Secretary of State Delbert Hoseman’s office. Karl Gibbs, Eddie Longstreet, Jeannie Johnson Staten, Jimmy Davidson and former Clay County Circuit Clerk Bobbie C. Davidson, all of West Point, have qualified for the election as has Roderick Van Daniel of Aberdeen.
Gibbs died Jan. 13 at the age of 76 after a brief illness. His district includes portions of Clay, Monroe and Lowndes counties.
The only Lowndes County precinct in the district is located on a portion of the Lowndes County Airbase. The polling place for that precinct is the North West Lowndes Fire Department on 128 Jess Lyons Road.
The election is the second special election called in a Clay County district this year.
Sixteenth District Sen. Bennie Turner, D-West Point, died in December and a special election was called by Bryant on Jan. 15. The election was won by Turner’s daughter, Angela.
