Navy awards $3.3B contract to Miss. shipyard

PASCAGOULA, Miss. -- The Navy says Huntington Ingalls Inc. has been awarded a $3.3 billion contract to build five Arleigh Burke-class destroyers in five years at the company's Pascagoula, Miss., shipyard. 

 

One of the DDG 51 class ships is scheduled to be built each year. That begins with the current federal budget year, which started Oct. 1. The contract goes through the budget year that ends Sept. 30, 2018. 

 

DDG 51 Program Manager George Nungesser says in a Huntington Ingalls news release that the class of ships "has proven itself to be the workhorse of the Navy's fleet." 

 

The company says it has delivered DDG 51 destroyers to the Navy and currently has two more under construction. 

 

The destroyer is "capable of simultaneously fighting air, surface and subsurface battles," the company says.
