Mississippi news weekly ceasing publication

SARDIS -- The Southern Reporter, a weekly newspaper in Sardis, will cease publication after 150 years and merge with its sister publication, The Panolian. 

 

Current Southern Reporter subscribers will begin receiving The Panolian twice-weekly in October. 

 

Both publications are owned by Howell Publications Inc., based in Batesville. 

 

The announcement was made Thursday in a news release from both newspapers and issued by the Mississippi Press Association. 

 

The Sardis-based newspaper will put out a final edition on Sept. 26. 

 

Howell Publications Inc. purchased the business from Cris Fletcher in 1998, a move that marked the end of three generations of Fletcher publishing dating back to 1930.
