Catfish acreage dropping sharply

The Associated Press

GREENVILLE -- An agriculture professor says Mississippi's catfish industry has been devastated by Asian imports.

Jimmy Avery says that in 2002, the state had 111,500 acres devoted to the catfish industry.

By 2012, that was down to 51,200 acres.

Avery is a Mississippi State University Extension Service professor and director of the Southern Regional Aquaculture Center.

The Delta Democrat Times reports that he spoke to the Greenville Rotary Club on Thursday.
