City wants county help with Island clean-up

Lowndes County recently gave a 4-to-7-acre parcel it owned in the Island to the city of Columbus but the city is asking county road crews to assist in clearing out the area.

Road manager Ronnie Burns met with Columbus Mayor Robert Smith last week to discuss how much assistance is desired from county workers for the project. Burns will address the board of supervisors during a meeting Friday with that report before they decide how much the county can pitch in.

Burns said the county would need a small bulldozer to clear out the debris and the process could take two to three weeks if supervisors give the approval.

"It's up to (the supervisors) if they want me to help them, but I'd like to take a couple of operators down there and try to help them clean out," Burns said. "It's a good bit to clean up in there and pile up and burn."

The mayor told supervisors on Oct. 15 that the plan was for city employees to clear the area.

Smith and an advisory committee formed earlier this year to explore redevelopment options recently met and agreed to seek assistance from the Golden Triangle Development Link on land use possibilities before setting a public hearing date and gathering input from property owners.

While Smith said he was open to any ideas committee members and the Link might present, his preference is to construct an open-air park on the west side of the recently renovated Old Highway 82 Bridge.
