MILLPORT, Ala. — The City of Millport’s sewer system will receive an upgrade after Mayor Icie Wriley announced Monday a $350,000 grant had been awarded from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
Millport will use the money to improve the sewer system and wastewater treatment plant, which include a system of lagoons that presently must be aerated by hand, via boat, Mayor Wriley said.
Wriley said the condition of the lagoons required constant maintenance by sewer department employees to maintain compliance with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Following Millport’s town council meeting Monday, town clerk Lynnette Ogden said work on the lagoons and additional channels that pump sewage to the wastewater treatment facility will likely begin early 2014.
In other council business Monday:
■ Unanimously approved the city’s adoption of a Yellow Dot program, which helps first responders quickly access health information during emergencies on roadways via decals and printed materials in a glove box
■ Unanimously approved the city’s renewal of its tax revenue enhancement agreement with Revenue Discovery Systems, a private company out of Birmingham that handles the town’s sales taxes and handles its business licensing
■ Re-appointed Joy Rittenberry to the library board
