Railroad crossing repairs will cause temporary lane closures next week at a major traffic artery in West Point.
All lanes of U.S. Highway 45 Alternate between Churchill Road and Miss. Highway 50 will be closed from 8 p.m. Dec. 16 to 6 a.m. the next day, when Mississippi Department of Transportation crews will alternate opening some lanes while Kansas City Railway continues to repair the rails and repave the lanes at the crossing. MDOT spokesman Kenny Foote said the alternating lane closures will continue until the railroad company finishes its work.
There will be another closure from 8 p.m. Dec. 18 to 6 a.m. Dec. 19 on 45 Alternate between Airport Road and Churchill Road so similar work can be done, Foote said. Detour signage will be in place for both closures, he said.
“There is a detour route for bigger vehicles that can’t get through the normal back roads,” Foote said. “That is along Highway 50 to 45 and 82. That route will be used going north and southbound.”
West Point chief administrative officer Randy Jones said the repairs have been a long-awaited project and will make the crossings safer for motorists.
