TUPELO — A Tupelo police officer remains hospitalized after a shooting that killed 38-year-old Cpl. Gale Stauffer.
Mayor Jason Shelton says a bystander used a fallen officer’s radio to report the shooting.
The wounded officer’s name has not been released. He was in critical condition Monday at North Mississippi Medical Center. No update was available early Tuesday.
WTVA-TV reports that Police Chief Bart Aguirre says the officers were shot when they tried to stop a getaway car after a robbery at a BancorpSouth branch. The bank and FBI are offering $100,000 for information leading to the gunmen.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the FBI says the killer may have driven a charcoal colored, medium-sized, four-door sedan, possibly a Chrysler 200 or a Honda of some type.
