A year after the Mississippi Silicon project fell through in Lowndes County, entities are getting reimbursed nearly a quarter of a million dollars.
Golden Triangle Development Link CEO Joe Max Higgins informed county supervisors today about the development. The county, 4-County Electric Power Association and Lowndes County Industrial Development Authority combined will receive $238,000 back that they spent trying to lure the company to Lowndes County in 2012.
Higgins said the Mississippi Development Authority has already wired the money to the Link.
The county will receive $69,000-plus, the Lowndes County Industrial Development Authority $86,000-plus and 4-County will receive $82,500-plus. Higgins said it is his understanding that MDA subtracted the total amount being paid back to Lowndes County entities from the grant it gave the company for its Burnsville site.
It was reported last week that Silicor, which named its Mississippi operations Mississippi Silicon, has recommitted to a project in Tishomingo County that will include a $200 million investment. The plant will take 18-20 months to build and produce 200 jobs, the report stated.
Silicor missed a Dec. 31, 2012 deadline to put $150,000 in an escrow account for the plant in Lowndes County. Mississippi Silicon CEO and president David Tuten recently stated the new site in Burnsville was the ideal location for the new project. Higgins told The Dispatch the proposed site in Lowndes County had water, sewer and road infrastructure in place.
John Correnti, chairman of the board for Mississippi Silicon, led the unsuccessful effort to locate the project in Lowndes County. He successfully launched the Severstal facility located near the Golden Triangle Regional Airport.
