Mississippi's unemployment rate dropped a percentage point -- to 9.5 percent -- in August, but still is above the 7.4-percent jobless rate seen in August 2008.
According to data released Wednesday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, Lowndes County had a 10.9 percent unemployment rate in August, Clay County had a jobless rate of 18.4 percent, Oktibbeha County's rate was 9.5 percent, Monroe County had an unemployment rate of 14.1 percent and Noxubee County's jobless rate was 18 percent.
Rankin and Madison counties had the lowest jobless rates at 5.9 percent and 6.7 percent, respectively, and Jefferson County had the highest at 18.6 percent.
