Mississippi University for Women residence halls are getting a facelift.
The enhancements will begin at Callaway Hall this summer and hopefully be completed by fall, school officials said.
“We don’t have definite dates but we want things in place before school starts,” said Sirena Cantrell, interim dean of students and director of housing and residence life.
While the halls are not receiving a major structural overhaul, they are undergoing “serious enhancements” Cantrell.
“Callaway is going to receive new paint, new furniture, sprinkler system, new water fountain and new awnings,” Cantrell said.
The exteriors of Kincannon Hall and Jones Hall are also being painted.
Over the next six years, each of the residence halls will be updated. The enhancements have been in the works for years, Cantrell said, with funding coming from an existing in-house budget.
Of the 2,600 students enrolled at MUW, including online students, 540 live on campus.
Cantrell said The W is not only sprucing up the dorms but the campus as well. A green space has been created from old tennis courts that were no longer functional.
“We really wanted to enhance on campus living experience because we want our students to stay on campus and not move off,” she said. “The area behind Kincannon is now a green space with benches for the students in Kincannon and Jones to be able to hang out. It will be beautiful in the spring.”
