West Point clerk says he was on verge of firing, resigned instead

Jason Browne

WEST POINT -- West Point City Clerk Robin Perry''s recent resignation may have preempted his firing by the city board.

Perry submitted a verbal resignation during a meeting of the West Point Board of Mayor and Selectmen Sept. 17 amid allegations of improper conduct.

"It was either termination or resignation, and I resigned," said Perry. "I really don''t know (the board''s intentions). The minutes don''t show any action."

Allegations have surfaced that Perry cashed a personal check at the West Point Water and Light Department and the check later bounced. Perry declined to comment on the allegation.

He was also suspected of having purchased a personal computer and invoicing its cost to the city.

"It''s not the way it sounds," said Perry about the purchase of the computer. "Employees can do purchases through the city then have their payroll deducted."

West Point Chief Administrative Officer Randy Jones declined to comment on the allegations against Perry, as did Ward 3 Selectman Charles Collins, Ward 4 Selectman Keith McBrayer and Ward 5 Selectman Jasper Pittman.

"I don''t want to go into all of that," said Pittman. "I''m going to give him the courtesy of not putting his business out."

The city clerk is the second senior-level opening at the city since the new Board of Selectmen took office. Controversy still swirls around the Aug. 11 firing of former Police Chief Steve Bingham. Bingham has said he was given no reason for his termination.

Bingham,Bingham,Bingham..Bla,bla,bla.He knows exactly why he was fired.I wish this guy would just disapear. When the board IS allowed to release there "Smokeing gun" info, its going to shock the crap out of everyone!I know my comments here are going to offend some of you who stand behind the cheif and i apologize to you,but its time to move on instead of grinding this out any longer. The board has made its decision and right or wrong they WILL NOT reverse it.There is nothing we that can be done about it,lets just put this behind us.
