Boy, 14, arrested for auto break-in; suspected in others

Printer friendly version of this article

Columbus police say a 14-year-old boy who made his getaways in his sister’s car is responsible for a wave of auto break-ins across the city.

Thursday, the boy was spotted breaking into a car in the K-Mart parking lot, at 2308 Highway 45 N., by a witness who called police. When officers arrived, he drove off in a waiting vehicle believed to belong to his sister.

Officers chased the vehicle to Taco Bell in the K-Mart parking lot, where the suspect abandoned the car and fled on foot. Officers were unable to apprehend the suspect at that time, but later traced him to the River Hill Chevron at 229 Main St., where he was arrested and charged with burglary of an automobile.

The car driven by the suspect had been witnessed in the vicinity of multiple recent automobile burglaries. The juvenile, whose name was not released bcause of his age, is believed to be responsible for six or more recent car burglaries.

Other felony arrests reported Friday by the Columbus Police Department:

  • Phat Vinh Tang, 20, of 1919 Old Aberdeen Road in Columbus was arrested Thursday by the CPD on one count of statutory rape.

Tang was arrested at his home at 4:15 p.m. No bond or court date has been set.

  • Wendy Schmitz, 26, of 30 County Road 395 in Water Valley, was arrested Tuesday by the CPD on one count of felony shoplifting.

  • Lacey Yeager, 26, of Water Valley, was arrested Tuesday by the CPD on one count of felony shoplifting.

  • India Smith, 24, of 905 Hemlock St. in Columbus, was arrested Wednesday by the CPD for false pretense. Smith provided a counterfeit insurance card in Columbus Municipal Court.

Put these people on a chain gang and make them work their fines off and they MAY respect what others work for. I don't care what age they are, plaster picture and name of the news. Why should get their name protected? The word people is called LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY!!!!! They want others to work and they just go and take it.
Prisons are full of sons and daughters of broken hearted parents.

I also agree that the public should be able to view their picture to see who they are that way maybe they would think twice before doing a crime and make them work to pay off their fines and court costs

According to all the ppl that commented on the arrest report a day or so ago, just because there are no jobs in MS then it's okay to be theives...well this boy is only 14, not old enough to get a job, what's the excuse they are going to make for these thug, theiving kids that run the streets and do whatever they want. I agree, tell their names and plaster their faces so we can see who they are...we have a right to know who might be fixing to steal from us.

Send them to Sherrif in AZ and let them live in a tent in the hot climate wearing pink clothes. Maybe they would have time to think while working on the chain gang.

This boy is 14 years old.
And yet, NO one has mentioned his parents.

WHERE ARE THE PARENTS of these trouble makers?

I'm not excusing his behavior here...if he is responsible for the break ins, then he should be charged and pay the time.

But, it all starts at home.

Most of them are out doing the same thing along with drugs, sex, beating up family and the list goes on. What people need is a new revelation and that is to get in church and let God turn their lives around. Parents do not want to step up to the plate and demand authority in their own home because it is a job and it takes a real man or woman to be bold enough to take that job on. We need to get the book of Proverbs out and seek out what it says about parenting. There is a solution to this problem and the word of God has the answer, the question is, do we really want to find an answer or are we just going to float along in life and say "whatever will be will be?" God help us all.

Cathy-I believe you misunderstood. No one was excuseing criminals,or crime. What they were trying to say was, with fewer jobs available crimes such as burglary and theft is becomeing worse, but no one is excuseing criminals.

Judge1, Go ahead, make my day! Sounds good to me but then we have the naysayers and the left wingers that believe that ignoring the problems will make them go away. Makes me wonder, is there any justice and public examples that will make criminals pay attention? Seems that crimes just keep happening with these JUVINALS and there is not a MEMERABLE punishment except a slap on the hand. Need to entertain them with something to remember!!!

I think they should hold the parents responsible for what their minor children does. There is no way you can't controll a 14 year old and if not my prayers go up for you.
