Aretha Macon shows off a giant cabbage she grew in her Nashville Ferry Road garden. Macon, a cashier at the Express Mart on Main Street in Columbus, attributes the massive size of the cabbage to a tip an “old man” gave her. “When it starts to grow, you break a bottom leaf off each week and the head will get bigger,” he told her. When asked what else she raises, Macon said, “I got it all — tomatoes, okra, squash, peppers, sweet potatoes and corn.” Photo by: Birney Imes/Dispatch Staff
