While all elected officials in Lowndes County have filed statements of economic interest this year for 2013 with the Mississippi Ethics Commission, filings from previous years since 2009 from three supervisors and two judges are missing from the database.
Each year, municipal, county, district and statewide officials are required to file SEIs with MEC. Incumbents must file by May 1, while appointees must file within 30 days of entering office.
The database shows all elected supervisors, clerks and judges filed before the deadline this year. Filings are missing for supervisors Harry Sanders and Leroy Brooks for 2011 and 2012. A 2012 filing is missing for Jeff Smith. County prosecuting attorney Allison Pritchard Kizer has a filing missing for 2012. County court judge Beverley Franklin has a filing missing for 2011 and 2012. Filings for all other elected county officials are on the database either since 2009 or since they assumed office.
The statement provides a brief summary of officials' economic ties, including income earned from businesses, control or ownership of companies and work and financial ties of spouses and others who live with them.
According to the MEC website, anyone who fails to file within a year of the May 1 deadline or knowingly fails to disclose required information can be fined up to $10,000.
MEC Assistant Director Chris Graham deferred any official comment from the state office to MEC Executive Director Tom Hood, who could not be reached for this article. Graham did say common protocol was for MEC staff to call elected officials who miss filing deadlines to remind them that they need to file. Most officials, he said, immediately do so after being notified.
