Columbus officials confirmed Wednesday that the city has received plans for a 13,000 square foot commercial building to be built at the corner of Old Aberdeen Road and 18th Avenue. That’s behind the Walgreens on Highway 45 North.
Kenny Wiegel, the city’s building official, said his office received the proposed plans on Oct. 2. The structure, he said, will house two businesses.
One will be Ulta Beauty, the largest beauty retailer in the United States. The chain, which operates 715 retail stores across 47 states, began in Chicago in 1990. Alex Lelli, senior vice president for growth and development for Ulta, told the New York Times this year that the company’s founders came from a drugstore background.
“Our prototype is a 10,000-square-foot store that offers over 20,000 (beauty products) from more than 500 brands,” Lelli said. “We’re a prestige, mass-merchandise and salon experience. Think Home Depot for women.”
Ulta, according to its corporate website, has a full-service salon in all of its stores. The Columbus site will occupy a 8,259 square feet spot.
The other part of the new building, Wiegel said, will be a Mattress Firm, one of the United States’ big sellers of Sealy and Serta mattresses. The company’s holdings include more than 1,500 stores in 36 states.
The Columbus site will occupy 3,835 square feet in the building.
Construction has not yet begun. Wiegel said preliminary plans call for two 18th Avenue entrances to the building’s parking lot to be installed.
While we’re on Highway 45 North, there was a line of people waiting to get into Books-A-Million at Leigh Mall on Wednesday morning. Why? Because the football teams at Ole Miss and Mississippi State are sharing the cover of the most recent Sports Illustrated. An employee at the bookstore said they had 12 copies for sure when the doors opened. The bookstore is hoping to get more.
Lastly, speaking of college football, two 50-yard-line tickets to the MSU v. Auburn football game at Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday will cost you about $1,200 on the secondary market, according to Stubhub.com.
