The assistant to Columbus’ mayor and chief operations officer is resigning.
Velma Woodard, who has served the city in that role for seven years, will work her last day in City Hall on Oct. 29. She will accept a position with the Columbus Municipal School District.
Woodard informed the city Oct. 15 in a letter that she appreciated the opportunity to serve the city.
“I have learned a lot about local government and have had the opportunity to meet some wonderful people,” Woodard said in the letter. “I would like to wish…the council and city employees the best as (they) continue to carry out the duties of city government.”
Columbus Mayor Robert Smith said he was thankful to have worked with Woodard.
“She demonstrates the highest level of professional commitment and competence in her work,” Smith said. “She always has a smile on her face. She’s a pleasure to work with and very reliable and dependable. She will be very hard to replace. She will be an asset to Columbus High School. We wish her the best of luck in her new position.”
City councilmen approved her resignation and authorized city human resources director Pat Mitchell to begin seeking applications and hiring a temporary employee until the position can be filled permanently.
