Caledonia, Artesia to host Christmas parades

Lowndes County communities are making preparations for their annual Christmas parades coming soon.

Caledonia has scheduled its annual parade Saturday Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. with the theme centered around "A Patriotic Christmas."

According to Town Clerk Judy Whitcomb, the parade lineup begins at 5:15 at Ola J. Pickett Park.

Serving as grand marshals for the event are local World War II veterans.

"We want to have as many veterans in the parade as possible," Whitcomb said.

Those interested in participating in the parade can register at the Caledonia Town Hall through Dec. 4

For more information, call Town Hall at 662-356-4117.

The town of Artesia has scheduled its parade for Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.

Mayor Jimmy Sanders said they expect at least 12-15 floats from various churches and organizations to be entered,

"We will also have the West Lowndes band taking part. Fred Tolan, the Crawford mayor, and Robert Smith, the mayor of Columbus, are scheduled to come," he said.

Lowndes County supervisors Jeff Smith of District 4 and Leroy Brooks of District 5 are also scheduled to attend.

No entry fee is required. Cash prizes will be awarded to float winners. The first-place winner receives $75; the second-place winner gets $50 and third place gets $35.
