Christmas and New Year’s Day passed without any fatalities on Golden Triangle roadways, according to numbers the Mississippi Highway Patrol released to The Dispatch on Friday.
For the time period beginning at 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve and running throughout New Year’s Day, Troop G — which includes the Golden Triangle — reported no fatal traffic collisions on state highways, according to MHP Public Affairs Officer Criss Turnipseed. However, the Golden Triangle did have five total traffic collisions during that timeframe, including two that were alcohol related, and three injuries.
Statewide, MHP reported 70 traffic collisions on state highways during that timeframe, which produces two fatalities and 24 total injuries.
The New Year’s holiday capped a December that saw a staggering increase in fatal vehicle crashes than the same month in 2013, according to the Mississippi Office of Highway Safety. The OHS reported 24 highway collision fatalities in Mississippi from Dec. 1-21, compared to 14 fatalities in the first 19 days of December 2013.
The state reported no highway traffic fatalities during the Christmas holiday, however.
