The Mississippi University for Women Gordy Honors College Forum Series begins a two-part examination of the civil rights movement in Mississippi with a screening tonight of the documentary “Spies of Mississippi.”
The critically acclaimed film will be shown in Nissan Auditorium in Parkinson Hall on the MUW campus at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
On Thursday, Feb. 19, the documentary’s producer and director, Dawn Porter, will be the Series’ featured speaker in the same auditorium, at 6 p.m.
“Spies of Mississippi” is the story of a secret spy agency formed by the state of Mississippi to preserve segregation. The film takes a look at the impact of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission formed in 1956 by the Mississippi legislature to monitor the activities of individuals thought to be involved in civil rights organizations. The documentary was aired on Independent Lens in 2014.
