Columbus has been chosen a top retirement destination for people looking to settle in small towns.
In the March/April edition of “Where To Retire,” the city is featured as one of “8 Great Small Town.” Editor Annette Fuller said the towns chosen for the list appeal to retirees “who want to settle into a slower pace, avoiding crowds and traffic.”
“These smaller communities offer a laid-back lifestyle with less time constraints, a lower cost of living and even the opportunity to walk to your destination — no cars necessary,” Fuller said in a statement. “There’s no skimping on the basics of daily life and they have a natural beauty that can’t be found in larger cities…knowing your neighbors and a little small-town politeness also go a long way.”
The Columbus appearance in the magazine notes that the town has a population of 23,500 and is “within a few hours” of Birmingham, Jackson and Memphis. It also notes a “thriving downtown,” antebellum homes and Columbus Air Force Base being part of the local fabric. The life enrichment courses offered at Mississippi University For Women and the Riverwalk are also mentioned.
The magazine states that the median sales price of Lowndes County homes was $124,900 during the third quarter of 2014, according to the Golden Triangle Association of Realtors.
The magazine, which was founded in 1992, is published six times a year. The March/April edition of “Where To Retire” comes out Tuesday.
