The music department at Mississippi University for Women will host the 2015 Southern Regional Conference of the College Music Society today through Saturday. All activities take place in Poindexter Hall.
More than 100 scholars, composers and performers are taking part in this three- day event featuring a combination of lectures, performances, workshops and recitals. Conference attendees are exposed to presentations on a variety of topics, such as famous composers and their works, the latest trends in music education and the state of the music industry in the 21st century. The presenters include music professors, graduate students and music professionals from around the United States.
The College Music Society (CMS) is a consortium of colleges, conservatories, universities and independent musicians and scholars dedicated to gathering, considering and disseminating ideas on the philosophy and practice of music. Each regional chapter of CMS organizes a yearly conference.
“We are very proud to host this year’s CMS Southern Regional Conference,” Dr. Julia Mortyakova, chair of The W’s music department, said. “Our students and the surrounding community will benefit greatly from the exposure to the high level of scholarly work and musical excellence the conference presenters will bring to our campus, and we are extremely proud to showcase our beautiful campus and the newly renovated Poindexter Hall to visitors from all over the country.”
The public is invited to attend today and Friday evening concerts (7:30 p.m. in the Connie Sills Kossen Auditorium), as well as the Saturday afternoon concert at 2 p.m. These performances are free and open to the public.
