West Point’s Main Street bridge is back, for now

DISPATCH STAFF REPORT

West Point''s Main Street bridge is back, for now. The city reopened the stretch of road on the east side of the intersection of Main Street and Highway 45 Alternate to cars and light trucks Friday. Randy Jones, West Point city administrator, reports the city spent about $18,000 to prepare the road for traffic and move utility lines in preparation for permanent repairs. The city will partner with the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Tombigbee River Valley Water Management District to install a new bridge using prefabricated materials. Jones estimates the permanent bridge will cost less than $300,000 and should be in place within six months. The bridge has been closed since the middle portion began to collapse because of erosion in September.
