Precisely a week after a winter storm dumped four-to-eight inches of snow in the Golden Triangle, another storm will move into the area late this evening.
The National Weather Service in Jackson placed north Mississippi under a winter storm warning and central Mississippi under a winter storm watch, but the forecast for the Golden Triangle is not as ominous.
“We aren’t forecasting significant icing, probably in the one-tenth of an inch range, which means the ice will be pretty isolated,” NWS forecaster Anna Weber told The Dispatch this morning. “As far as snow, we don’t project any real accumulation. Most of that will be farther north.”
Weber said the storm system should arrive in the area this evening and change from rain to a mix of sleet and freezing rain around midnight.
“That will continue throughout the early morning hours, with a chance of the sleet and freezing rain changing over to snow later in the morning, although we don’t expect a lot of snow there,” Weber said.
Today’s forecast will feature a wild swing in temperatures, from a high of 74 degrees to an overnight low of 29.
The northernmost part of the state is expected to see substantial ice and snow accumulations.
