The Starkville School District Board of Trustees unanimously named Eric Heiselt, the director of educational outreach and support programs within Mississippi State University’s school of engineering, school board president for the year.
Heiselt, who replaces former board President Lee Brand Jr., will lead the board as SSD merges with Oktibbeha County School District during July 1’s state-mandated consolidation.
The board also voted to name Jenny Turner as vice president, Keith Coble as secretary and Juliette Weaver-Reese as assistant secretary.
Brand still remains with the five-person board. He was unanimously reappointed to the board by aldermen last month.
Heiselt said serving with the school board since 2011 has been an enjoyable experience. Leading it, he said, is a privilege.
The board also approved an almost $545,000 bid to fix one of the last district roofs needing repairs.
Trustees unanimously authorized E. Cornell Malone Corp.’s low bid of $544,623 Friday for the Millsaps Career and Technology Center project. Proceeds from bonds previously approved by the board will finance the project.
SSD Superintendent Lewis Holloway said the roofing project was the last such fix the district needed to complete before consolidation. The board previously approved similar projects to fix bowed and warped trusses within the Greensboro Center.
Students will also make up recent snow days on April 6 and May 22. Since the governor called for a state of emergency associated with Thursday’s storm, Holloway said the district might not have to make the day up in the future.
If it is a must, Holloway said students would report back on Good Friday on April 3.
