Nepali students at Mississippi University for Women will hold a candlelight vigil Thursday for their native country.
The vigil is in honor of the people of Nepal, who last Saturday were affected by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that resulted in more than 4,000 deaths. The vigil will be held at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Bryan Green Gazebo on campus.
The students are also organizing relief efforts. Individuals wishing to aid those affected by the earthquake will be able to donate non-perishable food items, clothing, blankets, toiletries, batteries, towels, sanitary items and over-the-counter medicine such as pain reliever. The students will place boxes at different areas on campus where donations can be dropped off. The students are also using email, social media and flyers to let the public know about other ways to help with relief efforts.
“At this tragic moment, the whole W family has continuously given us emotional support,” senior Sadhana Thapa, who is a women’s studies major, said. “Our strength to extend efforts in Nepal is possible because of the love and support we have received from The W.”
