Rubens Fish & Steakhouse is working with the state Department of Health after a boil-water alert was issued to their establishment Thursday.
The alert was due to the presence of E. coli and total coliform bacteria in the restaurant’s water supply, according to a Department of Health media release. The release recommended all water used for cooking, food preparation or consumption be boiled for one minute before use.
Manager Coley Blakeney said the restaurant used only boiled or bottled water over the weekend, and that they are working with state officials to purify their water supply.
“We don’t know how it happened,” Blakeney said. “But we’re doing everything we can to work with the department.”
E. coli and total coliform bacteria generally indicate a problem with the water treatment process or the pipes that distribute water. According to Blakeney, the well was treated twice over the weekend and it will be tested again today.
Rubens is closed Monday through Wednesday, but they should have the samples back before the restaurant opens Thursday.
Even with the alert this weekend, Blakeney said it was business as usual.
“We had a decent little weekend,” he said.
Rubens Fish & Steakhouse is on Moore’s Creek Road.
