A bone found in Steens in May did not come from a human, according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
The bone was found May 28 in the yard of a Fernbank Road home. A resident thought the bone may be human and alerted the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department. The bone was flown to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson where it was examined.
While it is unclear what type of animal the bone came from, Merchant said it did not belong to a deer, cow or horse.
Merchant said the delay in the findings was because medical examiners wanted to be sure the bone was not human and did not belong to Keisha Turner, a woman from Vernon, Alabama, who has been missing since February.
Turner’s vehicle was discovered abandoned in Lowndes County this year. Brandon DeWayne Sykes, her ex-husband, has been indicted by an Alabama grand jury on capital murder charges in relation to Sykes’ disappearance. He is being held in Pickens County Jail.
