BILOXI — The city of Tupelo has received a top honor among Mississippi municipalities by winning the Mississippi Municipal League Overall Award for Excellence for 2015.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Tupelo received the honor during an awards program Wednesday as part of the league’s annual conference.
The award recognizes and encourages the achievement of Mississippi cities in meeting the challenges of municipal government, from innovative problem solving to increasing citizen participation in government.
The competition is divided into two population groups with one overall winner. The four categories for each population group include public safety, planning and economic development, city spirit and public works.
The city’s application focused on how the famous Tupelo Spirit came out in droves after an EF3 tornado tore through portions of Tupelo in 2014.
