It''s painfully cold in Mississippi and it''s going to get worse.
Residents should brace for subfreezing temperatures and the potential for some nasty driving conditions in the next few days. Low temperatures could hit single digits in parts of the state with a possible wind chill of 0 degrees in north Mississippi by Friday.
National Weather Service meteorologist Ariel Cohen said there''s a 90 percent chance of snow in north Mississippi as early as Wednesday night. Watch out for possible snow, sleet and freezing rain in central Mississippi late Wednesday and into Thursday and showers in the south with a smaller chance of snow, he said.
Forecasters aren''t sure how much snow could fall. Cohen said it could be as much as 1-2 inches in north Mississippi.
Low temperatures could dip into the single digits Friday night in north Mississippi and the teens in other parts of the state, Cohen said. A strong Arctic front across the South could keep high temperatures from climbing above the teens and 20s.
"There will be the potential for dangerously cold wind chills - below zero across the north, single digits elsewhere and teens in the south," he said.
"It could be messy to say the least. At this point a large part of the state could experience hazardous travel conditions but there''s still uncertainty" about how bad it will be.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation is preparing for ice on bridges and other hazardous conditions, said Donald Wash, a maintenance superintendent in the Jackson area. Trucks are ready to salt bridges and dozens of MDOT workers are on standby across the state, Wash said.
Shelters for the homeless and older residents without adequate heating opened Monday night across the state with more expected to do so over the next several days.
In Jackson, Cohen said there have been only nine times in the past 150 years with a string of days this time of year with high temperatures below 25 degrees.
The last time Tupelo recorded actual temperatures lower than 10 degrees was Jan. 24, 2003, when the mercury dropped to 7 degrees, according to the weather service.
Temperatures will "moderate" next week but it will still be cold with highs possible reaching the 40s and 50s depending on the area, though lows could still dip into the lower 30s and 20s, Cohen said.

You right there on it's going to get colder. Where is Al Gore when we need him? Where has all the Global Warming gone that he became filthy rich going around the world preaching about? Well, most of the warmth has gone South, in fact, way down South-like below the equator.
I remember my first trip to South America. It was mid Summer here but when I landed in Sante Ago , Chile, I discovered it was winter there. Since I didn't have winter clothing with me , guess who didn't leave the Hotel except for the trip back to the airport.
I think Mr. Gore owes the whole world a loud apology and then return the prize along with all the "cold cash" which should have been given to the most derserving person, IRENA SENDLER. A more fitting prize for Mr Gore would be the one for the biggest scam artist of the year. Second only to BO!

hey, guess what...global warming IS the reason for the stronger storms and colder weather...the damage has already been done. if enough ice melts into the gulf stream (which is what circulates warm water from the equator into the northern hemisphere and keeps it warm) all the weather patterns will alter and we can eventually expect another ice age. the earth normally experiences natural warming & cooling periods that have caused ice ages before. we have just accelerated the process this time. read already.
archaeo commented at 1/6/2010 9:23:00 AM:
And is IS also a fact that global warming is a natural occurance - or did all those ancient people that lived in what is now the Sahara Desert purposely warm up the atmosphere to turn that once lush, life teaming area into the desert it is now. Yes its gotten warmer and yes we as humans are speeding up the process, but its going to happen. Its a fact that we have had several ice ages, not just one big one. Its also a fact that for the last couple hundred if not thousand years that temperatures have been getting warmer driving the icier areas back. In XXXX years the trend will reverse and it will start getting colder until another ice age type pattern occurs. They used to actually TEACH that in school, but now the 'people in charge' like to tell us what they want us to know.
Oh and not trying to be a jerk or anything, but if its summer in the Northern Hemisphere - its winter in the Southern Hemisphere right? Doesn't Chile have one of the colder climates in South America due to its mountains and location?

Are you two of those guys who think the end of time is 2112? Some folk will believe anything the scam artist say. If BO or Al told you the earth is flat, would you say amen to that too? You probably believe hot water will freeze faster than cold water, huh. Public school or government run school has made you guys a mess. You must be pretty gullable to fall for the line about the warming causing cold weather, get real.
JC commented at 1/6/2010 10:58:00 AM:
ALL OF YOU WHO BELIEVE IN REFRIGERATION ARE JUST BUYING THE LINE THE SCAM ARTISTS AT WHIRLPOOL ARE SELLING YOU!!!! GET REAL!!!!11!!
YOU PROBABLY BELIEVE HOT WATER FREEZE FASTER THAN COLD WATER TOO LOL!!!!! BECAUSE OF YOUR SOCIALEST GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS!!!!!!

I actually think AL is a total conn artist.. Just not sure where you were going with the fridge stuff.. I think the global warming stuff is total malarky!
JC commented at 1/6/2010 12:09:00 PM:
AL GORE INVENTED GLOBAL WARMING TO ENRICH HIMSELF. HE WAS POOR BEFORE BUT NOW HE'S RICH. AND FAT. END OF STORY
archaeo commented at 1/6/2010 3:25:00 PM:
So all the Archaeological 'learning' that I received at a University level is just made up to right? All the climate changes that affected the prehistoric people didn't really happen? All the ice ages through the aeons were made up to huh?
As for big Al Gore - I 100% agree that he is money grubbing liberal that is exploiting global warming to further his own ends, but to say that is doesn't exist at all is a bit of a stretch. Do not care for the man one bit.
I didn't read anything on refridgeration either so I am lost there as well and your also saying that the earth is NOT more than 6000 years old?
GlobalFreezing commented at 1/6/2010 5:33:00 PM:
You guys have got to keep up with the times. Now that we are freezing our asses off in the coldest winter in 25 years and the ice caps are expanding again, the nomenclature has been changed. Those in the dark no longer refer to it as "global warming". It is now officially "climate change". We are no longer going to cook, now we are going to have an ice age.
Geez, get with it folks. How can we promote the biggest pseudoscience scam in history if you droops can't keep up with the terminology?
