CALEDONIA -- The town of Caledonia is preparing to improve its sewer line system, thanks to a $100,000 grant it has received from the Mississippi Development Authority.
At Tuesday''s meeting of the Caledonia Board of Aldermen, the board unanimously approved Mayor George Gerhart''s recommendation to use $12,000 as matching funds for the $100,000 grant the city is receiving.
"We are using the grant from the MDA to construct a sewer line extension from Old Wolfe Road to Cal Kola Store. The town has to come up with $12,000 in matching funds. Those will come from our general fund or any other fund that is available," Gerhart said.
The MDA recently announced Caledonia received $100,000 for infrastructure improvement. According to an MDA news release, the funds come from the Authority''s Community Services Division as part of the Small Municipalities and Limited Population County grant program.
Caledonia was one of 54 communities receiving this funding for improvement projects.
The grant program provides funding for community-based projects and counties to assist with public facilities and infrastructure needs.
Gerhart said no timetable has been set for when this project will start.
"We will discuss this again at a recessed meeting on Jan. 19," he said.
Gerhart also told the board, "We have a dog problem in Caledonia.
"We have received complaints of dogs running loose in neighborhoods, turning over trash cans and leaving a mess," said Gerhart, adding that dogs are required to be leashed in the town. "We are under the jurisdiction of the Lowndes County leash law, and we will begin now to strictly enforce this law," he said.
In other board business, the board heard from Caledonia Town Marshal Ben Kilgore, who reported his department has received a new car, and work is under way to add the necessary equipment.
