Kevin Bannister is hoping to bring a little bit of old-fashioned fun to Columbus when Cirque Millennia arrives at the Trotter Convention Center on Saturday.
The circus will go on at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Trotter. Bannister said the first 100 adult tickets are available online for $9.95. Adult tickets can also be purchased at the door for $15, and kids’ tickets are $7.50.
Bannister said free children’s tickets are available at several businesses throughout town.
“The reason we wanted to create the show was to bring it to smaller towns and venues and teach a little bit about the past, present and what we’re planning to do for the future of the circus,” Bannister said. “We want people to enjoy time away from the computer and TV and cellphones — the only time we see phones taken out during the show is when people are taking pictures.
“That’s the part I miss from family events,” he added. “You can bring the entire family to an event and you get to laugh and enjoy each other, and when you go home, you can tell your neighbors about it.”
Bannister described Cirque Millennia as “the circus of the future” — part of a growing trend of circuses leaving tents behind and moving into buildings to avoid weather complications, and abandoning animal acts.
Still, Bannister said Cirque Millennia will have plenty to offer family during its 90-minute show.
Fan favorites include a family of four that Bannister called an “outstanding” juggling act, or Carlos Sanchez, who stacks chairs up to 20 feet high while doing handstands and balancing acts.
The circus also feature popular children’s characters like Spongebob Squarepants and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
