A Columbus man is facing felony charges and facial wounds after a car chase with law enforcement last weekend.
Darius Roland Cuevas, 31, was driving over the speed limit the morning of August 9. When deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff Department tried to pull him over, he chose to step on the gas, according to LCSD Detective Ryan Rickart.
Cuevas was eventually detained at the intersection of Sand Road and Harrison Road in Columbus, but not before racking up three felony charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer.
“He used his vehicle to attempt to injure officers or threaten their safety,” Rickart said.
LCSD said Cuevas swerved his vehicle as if intending to ram department vehicles during the chase. Rickart did not disclose the path or duration of the chase.
Cuevas is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, felony feeling or eluding in a motor vehicle, failure to obey an officer and speeding 21-30 mph over the speed limit. Rickart said he was unsure if the chase ended in a crash.
Cuevas remains in custody at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. He was given a $25,000 bond for each felony count.
