No criminal charges will be filed relating to the December death of Orlando Guyton.
Lowndes County Circuit Court records show an August grand jury chose not to indict anyone following Guyton’s death, which occurred in law enforcement custody on Dec. 21.
Guyton, 41, of 1173 Yorkville Road, was in custody following his arrest after a home burglary on Applewood Drive.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation looked into the death. A MBI official presented the department’s findings to the grand jury. The jury ultimately decided to not pursue criminal charges.
The tenant at the home Guyton allegedly burglarized told authorities Guyton was covered in blood at the home and then fled. Authorities found Guyton “bleeding profusely from his body” shortly after the burglary and transported him to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, where he was treated. He spent two days in jail before being transported back to the hospital, where he died.
At the time, Guyton’s family members were concerned about the cause of death because they claimed no one from the LCSD reached out to them in the hours following Guyton’s death.
Kamal Karriem, who is close with the family, says the family is still waiting on the results of a second autopsy. Specifically, they are waiting on a toxicology report, Karriem told The Dispatch on Wednesday.
The family could not be reached for comment.
