The Starkville Police Department has taken one person into custody after suspects believed to be responsible for shootings on Wednesday led officers on a chase before fleeing on foot near an apartment complex by Mississippi State University.
According to a post on SPD’s Facebook page, the department is investigating two linked shootings–one on Tabor Street and a second at Camelot Apartments on North Montgomery Street. SPD was still seeking suspects as of early this morning.
In an earlier post, SPD said officers were pursuing suspects in a black sedan when they left the car and fled on foot near the Haven 12 Apartments and Thad Cochran Research, Technology and Economic Development Park. Officers took a black female, who was driving the car, into custody.
SPD’s post said no shots were fired toward officers during the incident and no injuries were reported.
The incident prompted Mississippi State University officials to issue a Maroon Alert shortly after 9 p.m. that said “Shots fired at Haven 12 three suspects reported running toward Research Park.”
Later updates through the Maroon Alert system indicated that the suspects were three black males and were at one point seen running toward Highway 12. MSU also clarified that no shots were fired on campus — Haven 12 is an off-campus apartment complex.
MSU Chief Communications Officer Sid Salter later tweeted: “No shots fired on our campus. No apparent connection to MSU personnel or students at this time. Appears to be a local crime adjacent to MSU.”
