TUPELO — Bond has been set for a 61-year-old Mississippi man accused of bombing a Walmart because the chain stopped selling his state’s flags.
During an initial court appearance Tuesday, Justice Court Judge Chick Hopkins set bond at $150,000 for Marshall Leonard, of Tupelo, who was formally charged with planting an explosive. Police Capt. Jerry Davis says the device was made of fireworks that Leonard “attempted to enhance.” Authorities say the explosive made a bang but did no damage.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Leonard said he plans to plead guilty and doesn’t need an attorney. Hopkins, however, appointed Leonard a public defender.
Leonard was arrested Sunday moments after he allegedly ignited and threw the explosives into the store. He’s known for flying a 4-foot-long state flag from his Mazda.
