An accident Friday evening resulted in the death of one man and left three children seriously injured when a vehicle rear-ended a trailer hauling logs on Highway 82.
Authorities with the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the crash on Highway 82 in Oktibbeha County about 6:30 p.m. Friday. A white GMC Yukon hit the trailer, entered the median and struck the cable barrier, according to a press release from Master Sgt. Criss Turnipseed with MHP. After the initial collision, a Ford Mustang collided with the overturned log truck.
John D. Gentry, 46, the driver of the Yukon, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. He was driving three boys, ages 11, nine and six, Turnipseed said. The three children were transported to Oktibbeha County Hospital Regional Medical Center. The 11-year-old and six-year-old were then sent to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where Saturday they were listed in critical condition. The nine-year-old also sustained serious injuries, according to Turnipseed.
Starkville resident Eddie Wooten, 59, the driver of the log truck, was transported to OCH with minor injuries, authorities said.
Wooten’s passenger, Starkville resident Charlie Rodgers, 55, was unharmed.
The driver of the Mustang, Durant resident Robert Lowe, 24, also sustained no injuries.
