AMORY — American Furniture Manufacturing will open a plant to make couches and sleeper sofas in Amory, investing $560,000 and hiring 140 people.
The company made the announcement Tuesday. It has 757 employees at its Ecru headquarters,
The Mississippi Development Authority will give $194,000 to renovate the 130,000 square-foot building, with Amory and Monroe County splitting a 10 percent local match.
MDA spokeswoman Tammy Craft says the company hasn’t requested property tax breaks.
CEO Al Wiygul says American Furniture will open six production lines by January’s end. He says the company — which was founded in 1998 — is expanding because it has grown by more than 20 percent in each of the past three years.
The building, owned by American Furniture, was used by Madison House until December 2013.
Craft says furniture workers typically make $13 to $18 hourly.
