A Columbus school bus collided with a Ford Fusion on Main Street about 2:30 p.m. Monday.
The bus had picked up students from Stokes-Beard Elementary School and was on its way to drop them off at after-schools programs at the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club when it collided with the car. The accident occurred near the intersection of 11th Street North and Main Street.
All of the students were checked by first responders from Columbus Fire & Rescue and personnel from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. There were no serious injuries, according to authorities.
However, twelve students were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to first responders.
Some of the injured children had tears in their eyes. Others clutched their heads as though in pain, but they all were alert, talking and able to walk onto another school bus sent to take them to the hospital.
The remaining students were put on another bus and taken to their destinations or were picked up by parents at the scene.
City officials at the scene said the school bus was headed west on Main Street when it rear-ended the Ford Fusion, which was trying to make a turn from the median.
The driver of the Ford was a 90-year-old Columbus resident who refused medical treatment.
