The four candidates for the Ward 5 City Council seat have each been invited to speak Saturday at the Mississippi Derby Tea Social.
Cadarral Eddings, Gary Jefferson, Stephen Jones and Marthalie Porter have each qualified for the special election to fill the vacant Ward 5 seat. The election is set to take place Feb. 16.
On Saturday during the Mississippi Derby Tea Social at Hunt Museum, each candidate will have three to five minutes to speak. The introduction of the candidates will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session. The event begins at 3 p.m.
Ward 5 absentee voting
The city of Columbus is now providing absentee ballots for the special election for the Ward 5 city council seat.
Absentee ballots are available at the city registrar’s office at 1621 Main Street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The registrar’s office will remain open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday for absentee voting.
The deadline for absentee voting at the registrar’s office is Feb. 13. Absentee ballots that have been mailed to voters must be returned by mail to the registrar’s office by 5 p.m. Feb. 15.
