The Boys & Girls Club of the Golden Triangle will host “The Purge” Saturday.
Organizers hope the large indoor yard sale will generate funds to support the nonprofit agency’s services for youth. The event from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Columbus facility at 1815 18th Ave. N. is part of the National Boys & Girls Club Week celebration, which began Monday and goes through Saturday.
“During this time, we have several activities for our members, their families and for the community,” said Nadia Colom, chief professional officer for the Columbus and Starkville clubs. “This is the first year for The Purge, and we hope it gets great community support so that it continues!”
In an average year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Golden Triangle, which includes both Columbus and Starkville, serves more than 785 youth with a staff of only 17 and about 100 volunteer tutors, mentors, special project volunteers, AmeriCorps and College Corps Vistas and volunteer board of directors. Each club averages about 120 members per day, according to Colom.
The clubs’ areas of service include academic support, character development, career and leadership support, the arts and health/nutrition.
The season for spring cleaning seemed an opportune time to organize the sale, Colom said. She hopes community members will support the fundraiser by registering for a space or coming out to shop. Spaces are $25. Proceeds will help the Columbus club offset summer field trip costs.
“We’re still receiving registrations and have received donations of children’s clothing items as well as beautiful ladies work and evening wear,” Colom said. Kitchenware will also be among the variety of items available.
Several civic groups such as the LINKS and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are participating.
“We hope this event will draw community members into our facilities so they can be reminded that we are here — still thriving and still doing the necessary work of serving youth in a safe and fun environment,” said Colom.
