WEST POINT — A West Point High School student was arrested at the school today after he allegedly shot a gun into the door of a local business earlier in the morning.
West Point Police identified the shooter as Cedric Burns, 18, of West Point. No one was injured in the incident, police said.
According to Capt. Mike Burgess, West Point Police Department chief of detectives, officers responded to a call at 7:30 a.m. today at the One Stop Deli Store, which is located on North Division Street, in reference to shots being fired.
“According to the sales clerk at the store, he stated that he had a disagreement with several high school-age black male students, and he had to make them leave the store,” Burgess said.
There were four black male juveniles in the store, he added. When the subjects left the store, Burgess said one of the subjects pulled out a handgun, firing a couple of shots at the front door of the store. The subjects then fled the area in a dark colored sports utility vehicle.
Burgess said the incident was caught on the store security video system.
Burns was taken into custody at the high school without incident, Burgess said, and has been charged with aggravated assault. He remains in custody in the Clay County Jail awaiting his bond to be set by the West Point Municipal Court judge.
The weapon used has not been recovered, Burgess said.
Officials at West Point High School along with police officers monitored the situation closely to ensure the students” safety during the investigation when Burns was taken into custody, he added.
