Save-A-Lot is looking to open a Golden Triangle store.
Five days ago, the discount grocery chain posted on its corporate website an ad for a full-time job. The position? “Store Management.” The location? “Columbus, Mississippi.”
The ad did not state where in the city the grocery store may be located or when it may open. Store officials did not respond to messages by press time today.
Save-A-Lot, based in Missouri, opened in 1977. There are more than 1,300 locations today. The closest one to Columbus is in Houston.
Moving on.
After nearly 40 years in the same location, the Waffle House in Columbus is moving.
The iconic southern chain has operated a restaurant at 1204 Hwy. 45 N. — beside Ramada Inn — since 1977. Now, the restaurant has plans to build a new spot — right across the highway.
Waffle House has purchased the lot and empty building at 1205 Hwy. 45 N. The city last week issued the chain a demolition permit that allows them to take down the 2,800-square-foot vacant structure, which most recently housed “Atlantic China & Japan Style Buffet.”
The city has issued the chain a permit to build a 1,630-square-foot restaurant at the same location.
A representative with Waffle House’s corporate office did not respond to messages seeking comment.
The first Waffle House opened in 1955 in Georgia. There are more than 2,100 locations today.
Lastly, early next month, Danny’s Southern Diner will open at 512 Alabama St.
The owner is Danny Osborne. He told The Dispatch the family restaurant will be open seven days a week and offer lunch and dinner. The focus will be on offerings made daily from scratch: catfish, fried chicken, barbecue, baked chicken, fried pork chops, baked pork chops, always fresh vegetables, etc. Meals will be served cafeteria-style.
Osborne said the eatery will have a laid-back atmosphere but also allow customers to get in and out with a plate “in two minutes” if they are in a hurry.
Darrell Osborne — Danny’s son — will manager the new restaurant. It will employ 10 to 12 people.
