TUPELO — Police in Mississippi say an officer has shot and killed a man who fought and injured the officer and his police dog after being chased and hiding under a house.
It’s the second weekend in a row that Tupelo police have fatally shot someone.
Coroner Carolyn Green identified the man shot Saturday night as 37-year-old Antwun Shumpert.
Police tell news media that Shumpert ran from his car after a traffic stop and was tracked to his hiding place about 10 p.m.
Deputy Chief Allan Gilbert says the case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Authorities say that last Saturday, 27-year-old Lyndarius Cortez Witherspoon was shot after shooting at police during a chase.
