Chism’s strip club bill on governor’s desk

Staff and Wire Report

A bill filed by Columbus Rep. Gary Chism giving Mississippi''s counties the authority to regulate strip clubs is headed to Gov. Haley Barbour.

The bill passed the Senate on Friday. It passed the House earlier.

The legislation gives county supervisors the authority to regulate strip clubs in rural areas.

Chism says he filed House Bill 170 after receiving numerous complaints about The Pony, a strip club that opened on Highway 45 Alternate near the Clay County line, in Lowndes County. The club with the 20-foot anatomically correct statue of a horse was the impetus for the bill, but will not be affected retroactively.

Sen. John Horhn of Jackson says only three counties have such regulations currently in state statute. They are Jackson, Harrison and Hancock counties on the coast.

It is currently illegal to single out strip clubs for spot zoning unless an entire county is specifically zoned for particular uses. Lowndes county is unzoned and cannot legally block the opening of a strip club or set restrictions.

To a certain business owner in the area of The Pony - give it up, they are there to stay and I don't believe they are interfering with the furniture business!

Article Comment David Holmes commented at 3/5/2010 12:36:00 PM:

Please leave the pony alone, we need jobs and they are doing their part!

Article Comment not a rude person commented at 3/5/2010 12:53:00 PM:

@liberal...... Know your facts before you make a comment. The business owner you are referring has no opinion one way or the other and has even refused to talk to any newspaper reporters regarding The Pony.

I can just imagine what was going on as far as discussion in the Senate and House. Reminds me of the bikini thong legislation where they said that for it not to be pubic indecency, it would have to be something like wider than 2 1/2"... and Horne of Lauderdale's reply, "I wanna be the guy with that job [measuring]."

Good old Mississippi vulgarity, hot and fried to death.

Don't we have anything better to worry about than this? And I thought prudes were finally dying out in droves... I guess not.

I remember one time on the Wheel of Fortune a guy thouth the puzzel said PIMPS and WHORES. and He blasted that out!!! Everyone laughed their heads off. Dont you think that is what our government has turned into? Pimps and Whores. This whole bill is a laugh, get on to some real business senator

Article Comment SEL commented at 3/5/2010 4:08:00 PM:

Thanks Gary! Sign the bill governor!

Article Comment disgusted commented at 3/5/2010 6:28:00 PM:

j money....if you need entertainment in Columbus move it to Columbus instead of having it closer to West Point.

The whole place is nasty and full of pathetic perverts that have to pay to see a naked woman.

Sel...I agree, sign the bill governor !!!!

Article Comment Narc commented at 3/5/2010 8:33:00 PM:

I've arrested several of their dancers on drug charges. If that is what they are offering out there, there are some hard up (no pun intended) people out there to see some boobs.

Article Comment Saved by Grace! commented at 3/6/2010 5:44:00 AM:

Saved by grace! While temptations loom out there, it is good to know that i have a wife that satisfies those hormones. Were it not for God's change in my life, I as well would be one bent on wrong entertainment. There is nothing progressive about that type of entertainment. Adam and Eve knew their nakedness the moment they sinned. And you too, know when you have sinned. Some of us have seared that awareness of right and wrong so badly that we actually, think it is appropriate to use vulgar language to defend a sinful act. Get real with Eternity! Where will you spend it?

Article Comment JT commented at 3/6/2010 7:41:00 PM:

disgusted and SEL..I agree 100% but when the lawyer for that nasty place lives and works as a Judge in West Point, what do you think are the chances of doing anything to it? and to Narc..there is a lot more than drugs going on in there. Maybe a little undercover might help to close it down. Said they even have a nasty food bar in there and no health inspection on it.

Article Comment Peggy commented at 3/6/2010 8:07:00 PM:

Strip clubs will add more sin in alot of ways in the world. The people that does the strips are making God very unhappy. He will punish them in the end, also the ones that goes to watch those kind of entertainments will also pe punished.Nothing good will ever come out of that kind of thing.People will enjoy, life here on earth is short.I would not want to be there in any way when Jesus comes back to earth.People ask yourselves would it be worth it!

Article Comment Red Bull commented at 3/7/2010 3:23:00 AM:

This is just great. Here we are worried about the strip club while the planet has frequent natural disasters, hundreds of thousands of people are dying in wars, and our government growing more corrupt by the minute. Who really cares about women who show off their bodies to support themselves? Did they not do worse things centuries ago in Roman society?

Article Comment Bubba Gump commented at 3/7/2010 5:59:00 AM:

So our political leaders are worried about a horse standing on the side of the road eh? And yet it doesn't seem to bother them a bit there is a room full of horses asses down in Jackson. Go figure?

Narc: you've probably arrested someone from Walmart before too. Shall we close them as well? But you go right on ahead and do your job dude, I don't have a problem with that at all.

Get real people. It's a titty bar. You want to see 'um then go there. If you don't want to see 'um, then don't go there.

Grace: get a grip huh? You and I both know you touch yourself.

Article Comment JT commented at 3/7/2010 10:36:00 AM:

Hey Bubba Gump
If you choose to go inside and see them then go but when I and my children and the eldery people have to drive past that place none of wants to see the nasty horse and his parts. Nor do we wish to see the van with the bare parts on it or the writing about the filth going on inside. If you want it keep it all inside and maybe people wouldn't be upset.
There were drugs in the old club. So much that the last owner took a few too many and died. Of all the things we might need here this is not one of them.

Article Comment Bubba Gump commented at 3/8/2010 5:23:00 AM:

I've never been in there myself. Not real sure how you managed to figure
I was supporting the place.

So a nude anatomically correct horse makes you hot huh? JT, you have issues. One of which is why you insist on turning your head to look if you don't want to look?

And "nasty horse"? Unless something has changed since the last time I passed through that area, all the horse is doing is standing on its hind legs. Are you objecting to it being a male horse? I don't see how a female horse would fit the business.

JT, could it just be "envy"?

Article Comment JT commented at 3/8/2010 5:40:00 AM:

Envy maybe on your part since you seem to enjoy it so much. Read on it is about children and elderly people and young ladies who would rather not have to see these SIGNS..TRUCKS..etc. right on the highway. You can't go tothe furniture store or past it without having it all in your face. A normal horse statue is beautiful but with parts exposed at 40 feet tall makes a nasty statement. Ever tried having to tell a child to not look every time you pass by something. I hope they shut it down. Maybe the new owner will meet the same fate as the first one. Good luck and God Bless Chism for trying to clean up this place. Maybe the lawyer for that club might pay more attention to West Point business being a Judge and not be so busy "working" there. He helped bring it here guess he wants it to stay too.

Article Comment Screech commented at 3/8/2010 4:08:00 PM:

I too agree with Gary Chism's motives for the regulations of "adult entertainment." I do not personally believe there is anything "adult" about the pony, it is just for the perverted and sexually confused. Confession time though, I have visited the pony and the previous club, before Christ saved me, and I AM SO GLAD I DON'T NEED TO GO BACK TO THESE TYPE OF ESTABLISHMENTS!! If you are defending this type of place, I will pray for you. The horse statue is a little over the edge, and anytime you have to tell an innocent child to turn his/her head, then your conscience is telling your that is not right.

Article Comment JT commented at 3/8/2010 7:32:00 PM:

Congrats Screech. You sound as if you have made some good decisions in your life. And I agree 110%. There is nothing right about that place or the people who work there. This includes their lawyer who is a public figure in the city of West Point. Not very nice huh.

Article Comment Bubba Gump commented at 3/9/2010 8:43:00 AM:

I'm not defending anything. I'm just not so sensitive that a fake horse on the side of the road is going to run me off to religion. And do you get all crazy when the dogs are doing it in the front yard too? Does this make you want to run to the Humane Shelter?

Ya'll are kinda a bunch of Nancy-boys, ain't ya?

Article Comment JT commented at 3/9/2010 2:16:00 PM:

Doggs in the front yard are a part of nature and they aren't there everyday.
And for your information..not a Nancy boy. A mom, a daughter and someone who just doesn't wish to have filth around in the public for viewing. No objections to what anyone wants to do..behind closed doors.

Article Comment susan commented at 3/9/2010 7:53:00 PM:

Who is this public figure from West Point involved with this strip club? Anybody know or want to say? What does he do for the city?

Article Comment Eloren commented at 3/10/2010 9:59:00 AM:

Dallas and Houston have large numbers of these clubs and they help draw and maintain large business conventions.

Article Comment bozo commented at 3/10/2010 5:26:00 PM:

I also think Gary Chism ought to focus his attention on more important things than passing such regulations. Rather than tinker with this at the state level, he ought to tell Supervisors if they want to regulate the Pony, to enact a zoning code in Lowndes County. It's needed anyway. Otherwise, you could build a $200k house and then have a pig farm next door. Go to this site and see what Chism did this session. Almost everything he authored, died in committee.
The craziest attempt was to reduce sales tax for sales of motorcycles. What would be the reason for this? Why not hybrid vehicles or cars with a high safety rating? Thankfully, it Died. Or what about exempting tax on sales of shotguns, handguns and rifles and ammo during second amendment week.? Huh? Wake up Chism. Local government and the State, needs the tax revenue. This ain't really a time to cut. It also died. I agree with Bubba Gump. Don't sign Governor!
