New jobless numbers released by the state provided little good news for the Golden Triangle, with new evidence that unemployment continues to tighten its grip on the area.
Unemployment rates rose across the Golden Triangle in January, according to the state Department of Employment Security report that showed Clay County had the third highest unemployment rate in the state. In Columbus, nearly one in five workers was unemployed, while Oktibbeha County joined the majority of Mississippi counties reporting double-digit unemployment.
Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Clay counties all experienced jumps in county unemployment rates for the month.
In Lowndes, the January rate was 13.4 percent, compared to 11.6 percent in December 2009 and 10.1 percent in January 2009.
Oktibbeha reported a 12 percent rate, compared to 9.4 percent in December 2009 and 8.3 percent in January 2009.
In Clay County, the January rate was 21.2 percent, a jump from 19 percent in December and 16 percent compared to January 2009.
Among the 15 cities the state tracks in its labor report, Columbus has the highest unemployment rate. Columbus'' rate of 19.9 percent for January is up from 18 percent in December and 15.5 percent compared to January 2009. Southaven posted the lowest rate among Mississippi''s top 15 cities, with a 7.6 percent rate for January.

Since BHO took office, unemployment rose 4.4% (from 15.5 to 19.9). He promised that the Stimulus Bill would keep unemployment below 8%. HE LIED!
I no longer have "hope!" (and darn little "change" in my pocket.)

chickasaw cty is in just as bad a shape...and the loss of jobs is'nt over yet. i think it is much worse than reported.. and it is gonna get worse. if a person has not been layed off or let go from their job yet, then best advice is to hunker down and get prepared just in case.

How does everyone like the change now? This administration is worse than the Carter debacle and going to get worse. You keep the change, I will take my freedom. They are giving the money to the wrong people. They need to give it back to the taxpayers. It would be worth a lot more than the little un employment check. Shucks I would be willing to give my portion to some hard working person that has paid into the system for year and actually been a contributor to the system rather than a leech and parasite that has never done a thing but leech off society. Free housing, free food, free cell phones, free utilities, free cars, free, free. free. Nothing is free, taxpayers are paying for all the leeches.
Take care of people that have worked hard all their lives and now are losing everything while the leeches keep sucking the blood out of the federal, state and local government and never miss a paycheck.

CROOKS ARE CROOKS ARE CROOKS. THIS COUNTRY IS SO SCREWED UP WE WILL NEVER RECOVER. THE GOVERNMENT GIVES THE BANKING INDUSTRY $714 BILLION TO HELP BOOST THE ECONOMY, AND $699 BILLION "UNACCOUNTED FOR" 30 DAYS LATER THE ECONOMY AND PEOPLE GOT NO BOOST EXCEPT IN THE RAISING OF BANK CARD AND LOAN INTEREST RATES!!! MY POINT BEING WHEN EVERY DAMN THING IN THIS COUNTRY IS RAN BY UNETHICAL, MONEY STEALING , LYING SCUM (THIS INCLUDES LOCAL AND CITY GOVERNMENTS AND ANYTHING WITH A BUDGET THAT GET'S STATE AND OR FEDERAL CASH; I.E. SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS) YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE MISUSED AND MISAPPROPRIATED FUNDS. THROWING MONEY TO THIEVES IS NOT AND SHOULDN'T BE AN OPTION. JESUS PLEASE COME BACK SOON.

Hey Slade, are you reading this? What happen to the "we're doing so well" parade? Goober.
Susie commented at 3/11/2010 10:03:00 AM:
I agree Danny! This country is ridiculous! I know people who have lost jobs(or didn't work to begin with)and they are purposely not looking for jobs because they are getting unemployment while they sent on their butts, drawing medicaid for thier children, WIC, free daycare and they get $600 a month in food stamps!!! When these bums are given a free ride, why should they bother to get out and look for work!! Fortunately, I have a job, but I am tired of my taxes going towards these lazy people and then the government raising my taxes cause they need MORE money!!
j commented at 3/11/2010 10:58:00 AM:
SUSIE and DANNY BROWNING if you can't beat em join em thats my motto... what your saying is true some don't won't to work but that doesn't mean their children have to suffer cause their parents aren't trying to do anything. But I tell you what you can easily loose it all today then what are you going to do be homeless or live off the government till you find a new job if there's one available
mike commented at 3/11/2010 2:41:00 PM:
AND WHY should you work??? So you can pay taxes to help those not working... Now what? You can get a free ride plus have people feel sorry for you... There ARE JOBS. They might not be at your front door or what you really want to do but anyone that wants it (that's able) CAN find work.... That's why they call work WORK instead of PLAY.. Not always fun and we all aren't winners...

Well, Susie & Danny. I dont get unemployment..the job I had was out of state..and that state is broke, I dont get food stamps, because I own (or owe) too much, I dont get WIC,,all my kids are grown..as far as jobs..tell me where in sams Blue Hill is a 55 yr old tradesman suppose to work..? if they are only hiring college students or minorities?? I am and have been trying to get work..it's easy to say how people can find jobs hen you both work..just get out of a job and find out for yourselves.....Mississippi..has no jobs..thats why I had to go out of state in the first place..the omly reason I came back..was I got laid off (Job was completed) and the economy crashed..NO CONSTRUCTION>>>>NO JOBS...PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT.

What I want to know is..people that have been 'displaced" why does unemployment not even equal minimum wage?
charles commented at 3/16/2010 9:07:00 AM:
When I read "UNEMPLOYMENT JUMPS ACROSS THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE", I thought the Golden Triangle unemployment rate was zero (unemployment landed elsewhere, not in the Golden Triangle). If all of the
grasshoppers jumped across the Tombigbee, the Tombigbee would not have any grasshoppers. Also, I wonder why the unemployment rate for the city of Columbus is so much higher than the unemployment of Lowndes County [i.e., 20% (1 in 5) vs 13.4%]
Karen commented at 3/16/2010 2:41:00 PM:
I read the unemployment story and also the closing of the plant and was very saddened by both.I also read all the comments. Yes there are a tremendous amount of abusers of government programs for the needy and our government has gotten us into a mess I don't know if we can recover from but unemployment is paid by the employers in this country even though in times like these t5he government has to help. There are people who truly cannot find jobs that want to work and then there are those who do not even try. we are in a catch 22 until the government wakes up and realizes that making new money is not the answer. I am afraid we are all going to have to learn how to do with much less and work harder to make ends meet.
