Former professional basketball player Travis Outlaw was arrested Tuesday after a grand jury indicted him on a felony marijuana charge.
The indictment, issued July 15, states the Starkville native possessed an amount of the drug greater than 250 grams but less than 1 kilogram on July 23, 2015.
Outlaw was arrested and booked at the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department for possession of a controlled substance. He was released that same day after posting a $10,000 bond.
Sheriff Steve Gladney said the case was presented by the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. A MBN public relations officer for its West Point branch was unavailable Friday.
Outlaw, a 31-year-old Starkville High School graduate, went straight to the NBA after high school when he was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2003. He spent a majority of his career with the team, but also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, New Jersey Nets and Sacramento Kings.
In 2014, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, who later waived him.
Outlaw has hosted the annual Travis Outlaw Day in the Park, an outdoor event featuring food, games and activities for youth, since shortly after turning pro.
Starkville aldermen first decreed Travis Outlaw Day on Aug. 26, 2005.
In 2013, the Starkville Parks Commission formally renamed a gymnasium at the Starkville Sportsplex in Outlaw’s honor.
