A Columbus teen described Monday by Columbus police as a “person of interest” in a shooting incident Saturday night is now behind bars.
Jameale Cortez Willis, 18, of 720 19th St. N. in Columbus, turned himself in Monday at 12:24 p.m. at the Columbus Police Department.
CPD Public Information Officer Terrie Songer said police officers contacted his mother, and asked her to talk with her son to see if he would turn himself in.
“Apparently, she persuaded him, because he turned himself in,” she said.
Songer said Willis has been charged with aggravated assault with a weapon. No bond or court date has been set.
The arrest stems from an incident which occurred Saturday at 11:45 p.m. at the Columbus Fairgrounds. A CPD officer who was at the fairgrounds doing a routine walkthrough heard gunshots and saw people running from the David Lavender Coliseum.
A 16-year-old female was shot in the upper arm, and was transported to the emergency room at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle where she was treated and released. A 19-year-old male was grazed by a bullet to a finger on his right hand. He was treated at the scene and was released.
“The investigation is still ongoing,” Songer said.
